Looking for a new restaurant that is unique, romantic and affordable? Look no further.
Eden, located in the heart of Shadyside and formerly known as Jen’s Juice Box, reopened recently with a new mission in mind: Improve your health, improve your life.
Eden serves a plethora of interesting and delectable dishes. Some vegetarian, some vegan and there are even a few dishes sprinkled throughout that contain chicken or turkey for those less inclined to partake in a veggie-filled meal.
However, if you are going to Eden, I suggest you venture outside your comfort zone and try some of the wholesome, delicious and nutritious vegan (and raw!) foods that Eden has to offer. Eden prides itself on providing local, fresh foods straight from the farms just outside the bustling city.
I was so excited to try this new, hidden gem of Pittsburgh. This town desperately needed a raw, vegan restaurant that was both accessible and sexy. Eden fits the bill. Simple decor, cool pictures hanging on the wall and a knowledgable staff await you when you enter. Enjoy their hot apple cider to start (it’s delicious!) and sample their delectable appetizers.
My table was adventurous, so we tried several different items that Eden had to offer. First up was a spicy slaw that the whole table went wild for. Made with ginger (that gave it quite a powerful flavor) cilantro and lime, my friends and I were fighting over the last nibbles left. An earthy sweet walnut pate on local apple slices wet our palates for more, and if you are into citrusy salads, you must try the enticing beet and apple salad. It was a crowd pleaser!
I couldn’t wait for the main courses to arrive. And I wasn’t disappointed. First up was an incredible mushroom and kale pizza on a sunflower seed and spinach crust, topped with cashew “cheese” and tomatoes. If you like spice, try the amazing pumpkin curry with coconut-carrot “rice”. Another favorite of the night was the spaghetti squash noodles, mint and peanut pad thai that my friends went wild for.
Not in the mood for raw? How about a hot bowl, sure to warm you up as the temperature drops. Choose from a delicious vegan vegetable curry, a meat-lovers local chicken tikki masala, or a vegan miso rice noodle. All served with rice and flat bread.
Yum!
But the fun didn’t stop there! After we stuffed ourselves full of delicious food, there had to be a little room for dessert, right? And we weren’t disappointed. Avocado-banana ice cream (which was incredibly creamy and light), vegan raw pumpkin pie on a nutty crust and (my personal favorite) raw, vegan chocolate raspberry pudding! Sure, I needed a fork lift to carry me out when we were through, but it was so worth it!
Eden also serves fresh squeezed juices and smoothies, as well as a delicious lunch menu and weekend brunch menu (that are both vegetarian and vegan friendly!) BYOB is sure to keep your wallet happy, as are the reasonable prices on all the menu items.
Be sure to check this new hotspot in the heart of Shadyside. I guarantee you will leave with one happy tummy!
