What about that wild art project you were working on? Or that intense novella you were so psyched about and almost had finished? You had just started playing tennis with your best girlfriend, and then you met HIM. Dust off that racket and call her! Oh, you’ve got a paid vacation coming? Really? How long? It’s now, or never, sweetheart. London’s calling. Paris beckons. The Bavarian hills echo your ancestral name. School? You didn’t! You dropped out to have a relationship? For shame. But, hey, it’s not at all hard to get back in. Do it! (Yes, they want your money like bees want honey!)
Wait. You didn’t do anything to help the breakup? It was all HER? What? HE was the cause of it all? Well, it’s certainly within the realm of possibility, but we humans normally don’t behave that way. Be- lieve it or not, you attributed something to this demise, no matter how small, that you shouldn’t have. You had an intense thought; you said something. You contributed somehow. The trap here is the Blame Game. Well, she hurt me more than I hurt her! Or, he was more selfish than me! Hey, hey...calm down.
Big things, little things. It’s all relative. The important thing is that you realize you contrib- uted, that you are sorry for what you said or did, that you understand both yourself and your former lover, and that you are trying to salvage the friendship.
But, hey, do yourself a huge favor. Stay away from the self-help/broken heart section of the book- store! Bad, bad, bad idea. Why? You need your heart to talk to you, and then a good and dear friend. Nothing else needs to be talking to you right now.
And you know, get some sleep... especially before you have that final talk with the one you were with. Agitation and nervousness because of lack of rest can set the tone for a failed friendship al- together, and you really don’t want that. There’s nothing in the world better than former lovers who have salvaged their friendship and still love and trust one another... platonically.
Because it’s all about love, baby. Nothing else.
