With so many dating sites out there these days, it can seem overwhelming as to what site is right for you. But, if you are like me, dating someone who is just “hot” isn’t going to cut it. Now, don’t get me wrong, I like a pretty face just as much as the next person, but there has to be much more to someone to keep my interest.

Enter, BrainiacDating.com. Brainiac Dating is a new internet dating website where it is “sexy to be smart!” As I browsed the site, I was happy to see that the people on the site were not only attractive, but had various interests and professions, from medical school students to musicians, all with a passion for learning and exploration.

One man refreshingly put on his profile, “I joined because I wanted to meet someone real.”

Looks like he came to the right place!

I had a conversation with the founder, Lawrence Chernin, who started this niche dating site (which has since taken off) and even found his own lady love (and fiancee!) through the meet-ups (more on that later).

Here’s what he had to say about this inGENIUS new website:

When asked about how he came up with the concept:

Chernin: I started about 2 years ago, as I was on many on the other [dating] sites and I tried them when I was single and was getting mixed results and wasn’t satisfied. There wasn’t an angle on intelligence. It was comparing resumes or photos. Even the sites that were more angled towards intelligence were still more focused on resumes. I didn’t want to make it all about IQ, either. It felt like an interview process.

On how Brainiac Dating was born:

Chernin: It was not a long period of deliberation to come up with it. I spoke with a friend about my difficulty in dating, and he said why don’t you do something with brainiacs? [Laughter] And, there it was!

On attracting new members to this ever-growing site:

Chernin: It took me a while to get it going. I had Brainiac-meet up groups in New York area. I would have events and would tell people at the events about the website and it spread through word of mouth. The people who knew me were willing to go onto the site. It grew from there. I knew there was a lot of demand for this.

How you join and the special features of the site:

Chernin: With most sites, people will join and then they have to search for others. That’s 95% of activity on most sites. But, my goal with Brainiac Dating was to make it easy for my members to find other people. We have lots of fun features on the site like forums, blogs, games, print-out cards, testimonials, fun quizzes, instant messenger, and the very popular, friend requests.

Anyone get engaged yet or married that met on Brainiac Dating?

Chernin: Occasionally, I get messages from people and I put them on out testimonials page. That’s always really nice to hear, when you know that two people met through the site and really hit it off.

The future of Brainiac Dating:

Chernin: We are just scratching the surface. We’ve had the Today Show cover the website and a lot of people signed up to the site because of that. We were featured in the about.com poll about various dating sites, which was very exciting. We won the poll for the best new niche site. That was a good thing to have!
