A favorite tradition in Sally's world...
It's great to be back, writing for twoday. Getting back into the swing of regular life, post-wedding, has been slow. But I'm working on it! Natalie and I have some new topics in store for you for my weekly columns, so stay tuned for that! In the meantime, I can't ignore what is coming up on Thursday! It is one of my favorite days of the year: Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving has it all: a day off of work, delicious food, lounging around, watching football, spending time with family, and reflecting on what you're thankful for.
My family's tradition started when my sister and I were little. We have a Thanksgiving brunch instead of dinner. My mom makes quiche, maple sausages, cheesy hash-browns, ambrosia salad and a delicious variety of sweets. We top it off with Mimosas and, if we're feeling frisky, Irish Coffee.
Throughout the years, Shirl has tried to vary the menu a bit, much to the dismay of me, my dad and my sister. Now that my mom has given in to making the same menu, there is a fantastic comfort and familiarity that comes with seeing those quiche and hash-browns every year.
And I'll let you in on a secret: my mom's quiches have the best crust in the world. I should probably leave the recipe sharing to Steve Bland, but this pie crust must be shared. My mom uses her mom's recipe and it is the recipe I use, too. It is simple, it is fool-proof and it turns out perfectly flaky every time.
All you need is two cups of flour, two tablespoons of sugar, 2/3 cup of vegetable oil, 1/3 cup milk.
That's it. No butter, no cold water, no fussing. Just mix it all up with a fork until it is just blended and roll out on floured waxed paper. The less you monkey with it or touch it, the better. This recipe is enough for the top and the bottom crust of a pie or for two open face pies or quiche.
I'm thankful to have my Nana's recipe. I'm thankful for my loving husband, my gorgeous and generous family, my health and successful career. With so much bad news in the world in the past few weeks, it seems that Thanksgiving couldn't come at a better time.
I hope everyone enjoys their holiday and spends their day being reflective and thankful.
...And I would love to hear from readers if you try my Nana's pie crust recipe!
