Plastic Surgery…To Cut or Not to Cut

Recently, my favorite trainwreck and yours, Heidi Montag, underwent extensive plastic surgery, at the ripe old age of 23. She underwent ten, count 'em, ten procedures in the span of 12 hours. Liposuction on her thighs, waist and hips, butt implants, bigger breast implants (she had already had them augmented a few years back), Botox, ear pinning, mini-brow lift, chin reduction, fat implanted into her cheeks and lips, and a nose job (another one).

WOW! Talk about an overhaul! Heidi defended her drastic surgery, claiming that she wants to be taken seriously as a pop star and needed her outside to be as beautiful as she felt on the inside. She said that she always felt like an ugly duckling, and that she wanted to undergo this surgery to boost her confidence. My question is, WHY HEIDI, WHY???

She really thinks that this is going to make her a star? Well, let me rephrase that because she is technically a celebrity. She really thinks this is going to make her a legitimate pop star?  Apparently, America, we have a problem. What is going on in our society when a perfectly healthy girl (well, physically, anyway) feels so desperate, so starved for attention, so low, that she needs to overhaul her entire body to the tune of thousands and thousands of dollars. Even after all the pain she suffered post-op, Heidi claims she wants MORE plastic surgery, interested in making her breasts a size "H" for "Heidi." Any plastic surgeon would be able to see that this young woman clearly has a mental imbalance and should be undergoing psychiatric treatment, not more plastic surgery. But, money talks, and what Heidi wants, I'm sure she will get.

The other interesting point about this situation was the lack of support she received from her hubby, always delightful Spencer Pratt . He liked her the way she was. He thought she was beautiful. But, his positive reinforcement of her physical appearance wasn't enough, apparently. The plastic surgery has driven a wedge between them, creating tension in their relationship where there wasn’t any before. To me, that is a bad sign. A relationship should be able to weather a storm, and a marriage should be able to weather many. Will this hurt their marriage? Will Spencer lose interest in a woman that he maybe didn't realize had such low self esteem? Will this be a turn off and negatively impact their relationship? Only time will tell.  It has also put a strain on her relationship with her family, who feel she looks like a "circus freak".

The public back last has already begun. Reading other blogs has given me insight into the fact that the average American finds plastic surgery disturbing and revolting. And yet, more and more women (and an increasing number of men) are going under the knife in hopes to come out with more self esteem on the other side. Instead of looking at ourselves as unique and beautiful spirits having a human experience, we want to reshape, reposition, and sometimes mutilate our bodies to appease other people. What's up with that?
