“I was sent to a fake prom…”

Follow Up on Constance McMillen...

I did a blog recently about a girl from Mississippi who wanted to dress in a tuxedo and bring her girlfriend to the prom. The school prom was shut down (with a private prom being held in its place) which led to a big media explosion across the country about this one brave girl’s fight for equality.

The Advocate interviewed Constance this week, and discovered that she was sent to a “fake prom” this weekend while the rest of the kids went to a “secret location” that had been organized by the parents.

Can I first just say, “ew.” Who the hell do these people think that they are? It is absolutely absurd to me that people have gone OUT OF THEIR WAY to embarrass and isolate this girl further. I mean, come on! The parents are acting more like children than the children! What values are they teaching their kids, exactly? ‘We are Christians and we are filled with hate and prejudice?’ Disgusting!

Originally, she and her date were invited to the privately held prom, but then plans changed. Constance was uninvited and the event was supposedly canceled at the last minute. She was sent to the country club for a new prom, but when she arrived, only 7 other students (two who had learning disabilities) arrived as did a few of her teachers and principal.

“They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them,” McMillen said. “The one that I wen to had seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to.”

“It hurts my feelings,” McMillen added. However, she did stay at the party and stated that, “They had the time of their lives. That’s the one good thing that comes out of this, no one had to worry about people making fun of them at the prom.”

This is seriously disturbing and disgusting. I don’t understand people. I don’t understand that they say she is going to hell for being gay, that she is a bad person, but look at who is really behaving badly! These people are totally hypocritical. You can’t preach about ‘Christian’ values being of value to anyone anymore, when you have grown men and women sabotaging another person’s life all because they disagree with it. What did she do that was so wrong? Wanting to go to her prom?

If the school and the parents hadn’t made a big deal out of this in the first place, none of this would have ever gotten so out of hand. It is a real tragedy in this day and age how judgmental, cold, irrational and fearful people can be.

Keep your head held high, Constance. You have shown real class, real courage, real conviction and I applaud you for that. As for the parents? God help you.

I think that’s terrible. It reminds me of the scene from Steven King’s movie “Carrie” where the cruel kids drop blood on Carrie at her prom. I realize that is fiction, but we have made a “witch-hunt” of homosexuals in this country today. At this young age, this young woman is experimenting. It’s not even a sure bet that she will choose to remain in a homosexual relationship for life; this may just be a fling? But the cruel backlash from her fellow students will do severe psychological damage in the long run. I also wonder where the teachers and faculty were in this whole mess? Weren’t there any adults present, or were they all “gay bashing” children, scared of something they don’t understand and can’t control?

I thought of “Carrie” too when I wrote this blog! Kids can be so cruel, but it was orchestrated by the parents, which makes this even worse! The parents not only condoned this behavior, but they encouraged and engaged in it, as well! Absolutely disgusting!

Well, this is Mississippi which is ranked among the least educated and most bigoted states in our nation.

Thankfully, it’s only in two-hand touch football that we ever have more than one Mississippi.
