Who wants to watch porn on a little computer screen, anyway? That is so 2010. Hong Kong’s ahead of the game with their new approach to porn; popcorn, IMAX, 3-D glasses, and of course, lots of sex. The first ever 3-D soft corn porn film arrives at a perfect time. The industry has been struggling over the last few years with increased internet competition. Something exciting had to be done to draw people back into watching erotic film.

The movie, based on a classic Chinese erotic text, “The Carnal Prayer Mat,” is a three million dollar film which follows a young man as he befriends a duke. The man enters a world of royal orgies and encounters other titillating experiences on his journey.

The producers hope that this sexy period drama will be a big hit with 3-D film watchers and begin to create a lucrative, niche film market.

“Somehow, when you’re doing a 3-D movie, you always want to make an impressive image because the viewers...are going to buy tickets with double or even triple the ticket price to get into a world they’ve never seen before,” said the U.K.-educated director, Christopher Sun.

“It’s not just erotica, they want some ‘wow factor’!”

And, ‘wow’ is what the response has been. Distributors in Europe and Asia are excited for the prospect of bringing this film to the masses, and many other major 3-D sexy films are in the works. Italian director Tinto Brass is planning a 3-D version of his infamous 1979 erotic film “Caligula”, while Hustler entertainment is working on a porno spoof of (what else?) “Avatar”.

However, there are some drawbacks to filming 3-D movies. Shooting a 3-D erotic film takes twice as long to shoot as a conventional film, and considering the higher budget necessary to bring these films to light, it is no surprise that the take up of 3-D productions has been sluggish, despite the excitement.

“We have to change the lenses for a long time, the setting, lighting, we need more time than a normal movie,” said Japanese porn star Saori Hara after completing a scene.

In spite of the setbacks and time constraints, it seems as if the world of 3-D porn is full steam ahead! This niche may prove to be of particular interest to those who are voyeuristic, as the action shots will come right at you. (No pun intended.) Perhaps swingers and polyamorous lovers alike will also enjoy the more realistic sexual encounters. I guess the only last step we could take to push this industry further would be to create holographic sex scenes.

On second thought, never mind. If I want it that up close and personal, I should just go find somebody to love.
